| Description: | The CLAL/VCLA holds 271 original audio recordings of about 450 children acquiring Sinhala in Sri Lanka, between the ages of 2.00.9 and 6.10.21 (years, months, days). The audio recordings involve natural speech samples from a subset of these children and production data collected from 4 experiments designed to test the development of complex syntax, using an elicited imitation method with each of 4 experimental designs. The designs targeted: acquisition of coordinate structures, of various types of adverbial subordinate clause structures, and of pronominal and null anaphora. A central database providing essential metadata on each child subject is linked to the audio files. Transcripts are currently being scanned as PDFs in conjunction with each audio file. For three of the experiments, comprehension data (in the form of an act out task) was also collected. Through a gift from the American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies, these audio tapes have been digitized to computer records and transcript scanning is proceeding. Collaboration with Cornell University A.Mann Library is developing test and production environments for a data staging repository (through NSF funding)(DataStaR) for these Silnhala data, intended to facilitate collaborative use of research materials. This consists of a Fedora repository (for storage of data files) coupled with a semantic metadata store based on the vitro application developed at A.Mann Library (http://vitro.mannlib.cornell.edu). | |
| Funding for digitization and archiving of this Sinhala data was made possible by the American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies, Boston, Mass. | ||
| Format: | Original tapes are in analogue audio cassette form, 60-90 minutes each. CDs have been created for each in two stages (stage 1 – whole tape; stage 2-broken down by child subject and by task.) Transcripts are generally handwritten, in the field/Sri Lanka and/or by linguists in the CLAL/Cornell. All experimental production data have been reliability checked by at least two transcribers. For description of format of digitized computer files of audio data see: “Audio Digitizing and Archiving Procedure. Cornell Language Acquisition Lab.” | |
