This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies.
We went to Centro Palmeras to record an interview with the shaman (Jaime Leguisamo Grefa), which I think went really well. From Centro Palmeras, which is on the other side from the river down from Kanambu, and still about 10 minutes by a motorboat, we had to walk even further in. It all looked quite different there - there is no road getting to that community, and the main means of communication is by canoe. We had to walk for about 20 minutes through low bush, than hit a river we had to cross by a small rickety canoe, than had to walk through another little river before we got to the shaman's house. He had a generator, and there were mobile coverage, too, so it was isolated in one sense, but not so much in the other. The interview got interrupted by the rain in the middle, and there were some noises on the recording from Canon, as I was putting the dead cat on the rode mike without stopping to record. Luckily, I also did a backup on the Zoom, as now (08.07) I accidentally (or rather, idiotically) formated the card. Is still to be seen whether it can be recovered - downloading a programme now. Right, writing later that same day, archives recover, although the programme said that the first two were not fully recovered. I did look over them briefly, and it looked as if they were fine. Will see. The interview itself had two parts - hence the two audio files, and the time in the middle (between in_07072013_01-_03 and _04-_06). A very strong rain started, and it was banging so loudly on the tin roof of the kitchen that we had to stop recording for about 20-30 minutes. In the edited version, the two parts have been merged, so that the raw files _01 -_03 now belong to in_07072013_01. This is being transcribed by Jacobo (I am adding thi on 06.08.2103), but on Tom castle's advice, I decided to keep the second half as it is, in 3 parts. Leguisamo is a mestizo surname, Nilo claims. Jacobo and Nilo weren't too impressed with Jaime's Kichwa, they say that as he is a mestizo, there are part when he talks fine, and others when you see that "le falta bastante". This bundle only contains the first part of the interview - the .mpeg file _01 contains the equivalent of mts files _01, _02 and _03, which were merged in edition. Camera: CanonXA10, microphones: Rode NTG2, AT825 Lavalier.
Main researcher on the project
He is a shaman by profession, I think his mother tongues are both Spanish and Kichwa. His language is marked as Tena Kichwa here, but the transcribers observed that he speaks a different dialect than they do in Nuevo Paraíso. However, since that wasn't clear from the start, I couldn't ask him more about this.
