| Description: | We are in a little Alta camp, on a watershed located 3 kilometers away from Barangay Villa. The Alta living there are working mostly on rattan and on plant crafting. The Barangay chieftain, Lorenzo, explains how they prepare the rattan so it can be used to make baskets, hammocks, chairs, beds, etc.. He explains that the meat inside the stems can also be eaten and reminds us that, that is what we had for breakfast. The rattan is brought from the top of the mountain, were the Alta chop the rattan stems, remove the spines, and fold them in a way they can be carried on the shoulder (as shown in the video) and pulled from the mountain to the watershed. Once the stems are transported, they are shaved off and divided into thinner stems which are then sold. At the time the video was being filmed, part of the community members where in the mountains collecting more stems. They usually spend a few nights away from the camp. Finally, Lorenzo explains that they can obtain 30 pesos (PHP) per bunch of rattan, (50 pieces), to which Ate Tikkay replies that in Diteki they can get up to 40 pesos. | |
