nalogo026
Documenting Nalögo, an Oceanic language of Santa Cruz Island
Contributor (recorder):Valentina Alfarano
Contributor (speaker):Hendry Bade
Coverage:Solomon Islands
Date:2017-11-20
Description:In this video recording, the speaker Hnedry Bade is describing the village organization in Nea and Nemboi. He makes a comparison between past and present times, showing how the organization has changed over time. In particular, he focuses on the relationship between men and women. As in other areas of Santa Cruz, men and women had a limited contact in daily life and they used to live separately. Men had a special type of house (namwe), which also worked as a dormitory for male adolescents and a meeting point for older men. This village system is no longer used, and people tend to live together.
Valentina Alfarano is the principal investigator of this project.
