Description:A free narrative based on the Frog Story book.
A project for the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language, based on fieldwork. It started in 1993 (under Dr. Spike Gildea's Northern Brazilian Cariban Languages Documentatino Project, NSF grant DBS-9210130) and continues to the present.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'interview', Discursive = 'explanation', Performance = 'narrative'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This session contains the description of the frog story book by Kurawaka Aretïna. The speaker had looked quickly through the book first and then went back to the first page. He described each page thoroughly before turning to the next one. He did come up with a ''story" for what was happening.
Only Tiriyó was used as throughout the session.
Aretïna narrated the frog story to Sérgio, who listened.
Sérgio Meira is the main researcher in the Tiriyó descriptive project.
Kurawaka Aretïna is a 50ish-year-old Tiriyó speaker who knows some Dutch, and a little Wayana. He was born in Surinam, and traveled once to the Netherlands. He lives now (2002) in the village of Kaikui Tëpu (Pedra da Onça), in Brazil.
Sérgio Meira is also the researcher responsible for the project on the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language.
I transcribed this file by myself, after having digitized it. In a later field trip (Feb. of 2002), I corrected my transcription with Wta's help. I used my standard Shoebox format: /r = register /t = Tiriyó text /s = surface morpheme segmentation /m = underlying morpheme segmentation /g = gloss /p = part of speech /i = indexes, keywords /f = free translation /o = original translation /c = comments
The original tape was given to Dick van den Born, who made me an identical copy. I digitized this copy, which is the source for the MPEG file.
