Organization of a Text Collection in Trumai, Aiming at its Scientific Documentation
Contributor:Speaker12
Raquel
Coverage:Brazil
Date:2001-07-02
Description:ENGLISH: A Trumai woman talks traditional songs that women of her village perform. The video was shot at the Boa Esperança village (a note: unfortunately the input for external microphone of the video camera got damaged during the field work, and as a result of that the video presents a little bit of hiss on the background. However, it is possible to understand the talk and the songs). No entanto, é perfeitamente possível entender a fala e as músicas).
The main purpose of the project is to organize a text collection of Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. Other kinds of materials will also be included in the archive of the language.
A Trumai woman talks about songs that the women of her village sing.
The speaker talks in Trumai.
Various people participate in this performance. They are members of the Boa Esperança village. The speech is made by Speaker12, who talks about the songs.
Speaker12 is a native speaker of Trumai. Both her parents were Trumai. She and her brother are the last descendents of the Awaldat group, a Trumai subdivision that used to speak a different dialect of the language. However, this dialect seems to have disappeared (Speaker12's way of speaking is similar to the way of speaking of the other Trumai individuals). Her late husband was Kayabi. She lives with her son and daughter-in-law and has several grandchildren. She is middle-aged (50 or more).
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
