Description:This session contains the balche ceremony proper, when all the guests have arrived and the drinking begins. See Bal_Rit_AM_01 and Bal_Rit_Prep for activities involved in the preparation for this ceremony.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = '', Discursive = '', Performance = ''. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This session contains the balche ceremony proper, when all the guests have arrived and the drinking begins. The ceremony begins at noon. It is extremely hot and very sunny. AM serves his guests balche, pouring each gourdful into the recipients' individual cups. Everyone is animated and talk over one another. At times the scene gets downright raucous. AM then asks each of the men to participate in the ceremony. Most decline, but a few men accompany AM, and they stand chanting together over the godpots. Later, SK chants with AM and makes offerings to the gods. The drinking, laughing, and talking continue throughout this ritual. After the offerings have been made, AM joins his guests. The ceremony terminates with the emptying of the balche log. By then, many men are quite drunk. The collectors did not film up to this point. See Bal_Rit_AM_01 and Bal_Rit_Prep for activities involved in the preparation for this ceremony.
Lacandon is the main language spoken in this session
These are not all the actors involved in the session, but they are the ones in the foreground of the session. AM leads the ceremony and is the primary contributor. KyM, KyG, and KA are seen on-camera talking. SK joins AM in giving offerings to the gods through AM's godpots. The collectors are present but are neither seen nor heard.
AM is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandones who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. He is related to CK and his family by marriage. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus.
SK is one of CK and KP's younger children. He was born in Naha and has lived there all his life. He still lives at home, with his new wife NI. He provides the bulk of the Lacandon-Spanish translations, and is present during many sessions recorded with AM.
The collector of this session data is also responsible for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
