Description:The Kohs and some of their family attend a Baptist church service in a nearby Tzeltal village.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
The Kohs and some of their family attend a Baptist church service in a nearby Tzeltal village. The event is their eating the body Christ ( their first Communion). The session contains exterior and interior shots of the church, the service, and the Kohs receiving their first communion (although they are obscured by other parishoners in the foreground). It goes late into the night.
Spanish and Tzeltal are spoken in this session.
There are several participants in this service. Besides the pastor and the particpants listed, are many Tzeltal parishoners.
CKD is the uncle of Lej , in that he is the youngest son of KPG and the youngest brother of KyP (who is Lej's father). CKD lives with his mothers, brothers and sisters and his buddy Lej.
CNK is one of CK's daughters and the daughter of CK's third wife, KM. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still ives at home, as do most Lacandón girls before they marry (typically, at 14 years of age). She lives in a tradiitional household with more than mother and, her unmarried siblings, and young niece and nephew.
KM is CK Viejo's third and eldest living wife. She is the head of the household, by virtue of her seniority. She has borne ten children, all of whom are now adults and have long since moved out of the family household. She is adored by KP's grandchild, Lej. She has never left the village, except for the occasional trips to other surrounding villages, and the larger towns of Ocosingo and San Cristobal.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
KP was born and raised in Naha. She was brought into CK Viejo's household when she was five years old. She was raised by her co-wife KM. She and CK Viejo had ten children, some of whom still live on the family property. She has not ventured far from Naha.
