Description: | The women of Naha give "curing strings" to a woman and her new-born baby.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
The women of Naha give "curing strings" to a woman and her new-born baby. This event occurred spontaneously. The collector was given permission to film it.
Lacandon is the predominant language spoken in this session.
Several women of the village gather in the hut. They talk at the same time. The center of attraction is CHX and her new baby. The collector is present but is neither seen nor heard on camera.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
CHX is the youngest daughter of CK Viejo and KP. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still lives at home and helps out with the bulk of household chores
KP was born and raised in Naha. She was brought into CK Viejo's household when she was five years old. She was raised by her co-wife KM. She and CK Viejo had ten children, some of whom still live on the family property. She has not ventured far from Naha.
For a demonstration of spinning natural cotton and the accompanying "work song", see the session below, ../../Monologues/Songs/Metadata/Spinning_JK.imdi
