Frogstory_BMjr
Lacandón Cultural Heritage
Contributor:Suzanne
Contributor (speaker):BMjr
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2004-04-11
Description:BMjr narrates Frog, Where Are You, Mercer Mayer's picture book, at the request of the collectors. The purpose is to compare the narratives of Lacandon children. A Spanish version is found in the session, Frogstory_sp_BMjr.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
BMjr was asked to narrate Frog Where Are You, for the collectors. He is one of many speakers asked to do this. A Spanish version of the same story is found in Frogstory_sp_BMjr.
Lacandon is the only language spoken in this session.
BMjr is the only contributor in this session. The collector is present but does not interrupt during BMjr's narration.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
BMjr is the son of BM. He was born and raised in Naha, and still lives at home. He has not travelled too far from home, attending secondary school in a nearby Tzeltal village.
