Coverage:Mexico
Description:Lej narrates Frog Where Are You, Mercer Mayer's picture book, for the collectors. The purpose of this session is to record narrative skills of bilingual children in Naha. The Spanish version can be found in Frogstory_sp_Lej.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
Lej was asked to narrate Frog Where Are You, for the collectors. He e is one of many children asked to do this. A Lacandon version of the same story is found in Frogstory_sp_Lej.mpg.
Lacandon is the language used in this session.
Lej is the main contributor in this session. The only other people present are the collectors, who are neither seen nor heard.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
Lej is the son of KyG and the grandson of KP. As such he is also the uncle of his buddy CKD. He lives with his grandmothers and their unmarried children.
