Description: | JK narrates three traditional stories: Ah T'u7ul, U Yitbeh, and Yum K'aax.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
JK narrates three traditional stories , Ah T'u7ul, U Yit Beh, and Yum K'aax. They blend into each other, thus making it difficult to decide where one ends and the next one begins. Therefore, this session has been identified as a single session.
Lacandon is the main language used in this session.
JK is the main speaker in this session. KM, KP, and CNK can be heard participating in the speech event. Her brother, KMJKBr, is present but does not participate. The collector is present and may be heard speaking Spanish to CNK.
CNK is one of CK's daughters and the daughter of CK's third wife, KM. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still ives at home, as do most Lacandón girls before they marry (typically, at 14 years of age). She lives in a tradiitional household with more than mother and, her unmarried siblings, and young niece and nephew.
KP was born and raised in Naha. She was brought into CK Viejo's household when she was five years old. She was raised by her co-wife KM. She and CK Viejo had ten children, some of whom still live on the family property. She has not ventured far from Naha.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
KM is CK Viejo's third and eldest living wife. She is the head of the household, by virtue of her seniority. She has borne ten children, all of whom are now adults and have long since moved out of the family household. She is adored by KP's grandchild, Lej. She has never left the village, except for the occasional trips to other surrounding villages, and the larger towns of Ocosingo and San Cristobal.
JK was born in Naha. She is KM's sister, and lives with her brother.
KMJKBr was born and raised in Naha. He is the brother of KM and JK. He is single and lives with JK.
