Description:121 gives a description of the women´s task of making salt to Sebastian Drude and Sabine Reiter. The recording takes place under the roof outside the guest´s house. Inside the house, some men listen to the description and comment on the quality of the performance. Due to these circumstances 121 is extremely nervous during the recording. The introduction and the final remarks to the recording by Sebastian Drude are given in media files 121_salt1.wav/mpg and 121_salt3wav/mpg.
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language, a tupian language of a small speech community in central Brazil. It is funded for 2000/2001 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme. The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Awetí in 1998.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'Unspecified', Discursive = 'procedure', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
121 explains the various stages of making salt, starting with the collection of the salt plant, which is then piled into heaps and burnt. Thereafter the ashes are put into a filter and the salt is washed out with water. The liquid is boiled until the water has evaporated. The remaining salt is made into piles and dried further. After that the women put the salt into little baskets to store it and to exchange it for the goods of the other Xingu people. 121 also describes the food salt is added to. Due to her nervousness she mixes up the chronology of the events and forgets important parts which she adds at the end of her description after being asked by Sebastian. There is also an introduction in Portuguese by Sebastian Drude which is translated into Awetí by Teacher Awetí. After 121 has finished her explanation Sebastian makes some concluding remarks.
The description given by 121 is given in Awetí. The questions asked by Sebastian towards the end of her talk as well as the introductory and concluding remarks are in Portuguese.
121 is probably nervous due to the fact that inside the guest's house several men are listening to her talk. She also does not have a close relationship neither to Sebastian Drude nor to Sabine Reiter so that in general she may feel not very confortable. ###
