Description:This session contains a series of recordings of data, elicited from 157, by means of several lists of tools and artefacts which also include musical instruments and jewellery. The first two parts primarily contain names of tools used in everyday life. The third part is a recording of names of musical instruments. Parts 4 and 5 are a list of adornments used by the Awetïí men and women, which also includes body painting. Part 6 is the recording of a list of names of plants and food.
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
Sebastian had a list of portuguese words for artifacts and tools common in the Xingú area prepared by the three Brazilian DOBES projects. He elicited the Awetí terms for these tools and related vocabulary.
Sebastian asks the name of the items mostly in Portuguese and 157 answers mostly in Awetí.
157 treats Sebastian like a kind of foster son and also calls him "son". In return, Sebastian considers 157 to be his "father" and accordingly treats him with affection and high respect.
157 used to be the chief of the Awetí village until approximately 1970. In 2001, he continues to live among the Kamayurá. His son 146 is the current principal chief in the Awetí village. 157 is arguably the person who best knows the oral tradition in Awetí, and one of the strongest shamans of the region.
