Description:Different images from two different stages in the process of house-building. One house, more advanced, is the central men's hut, built with less care (using nails), the other is a traditional house being constructed by 026 (with some help by his younger relatives).
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
. First a total view of the men's hut the roof of which is being made. The horizontal bars are being fixed on the vertical stakes with nails. . Then different types of houses (traditional and less traditional ones) are shown from the center. . At next the house in construction by 026 is shown in detail. it has already the main structure, but the finer vertical bars and the fine horizontal bars where the straw covering is put are still missing. Next we see 026 and his apprendice, his grandson 073 finishing the strucutre of the roof in the traditional way (e.g., without nails). . The park that is used for joining the different posts, stakes and bars is shown rolled up on the ground. . Finally we see several younger Awetí covering the men's hut (some days later). They select and adujst long straw and cover the roof with it.
Several Awetí, mostly men, appear in this session. Special focus is on 026 and his grandson 073 who are building 026's new house.
026 is one of the few elder members of the Awetí. He is son of an important chief, but his father died before he could teach him sufficient of his knowledge and skills for 026 feel save being a chief himself; therefore he rejects to be any more than a regular member of the village. His oldest son, 030, is a very respected adult. His second son and his doughters left to the second village in 2002.
House-building is a task carried out by men. The owner of the new house pays the house-builders with food which is distributed in the village centre after the work has been done.
The principal researcher of the Aweti Project. Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (teaching and research assistant), Free University Berlin / Germany. Magister Artium in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 1997). Two-year DAAD fellowship at Museu Goeldi, Belém, 1997--1999. PhD in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 2002). Initiated field research among the Aweti in 1998. Field stays: July--October 1998, September--October 1999, June--August 2001, June--August 2002, May--July 2003.
079 is the second child (son) of 030 and 074. He is not married yet. He did not pass through the reclusion ritual. He is excellent at fishing and knows the forest very well.
The session is divided into three parts on the DMF. It ends at 00:43:03, but the time spans from 00:11:24 to 00:29:56 and from 00:38:03 to 00:41:42 need to be cut out since these belong to different sessions.
