Description:Monday 31st July. Continuation of the case in r06_v1. Whole community summoned by conch shell. The boy Wéni who confessed named some Jinjo accomplices, so they were interrogated, but successfully pleaded innocence. One of them was Tââlââ’s brother Tâângi and nephew Kââti. Much simultaneous haranging, so petty untranscrible. The interrogation of the boy I filmed close up, and is remarkable for eye contact. By chance the loot was found by some boys hidden under a pile of dirt, who reported them, beyond P:uum. Wéni was confronted by them and confessed. Wéni’s M is from Misima, F from Wulanga. The magistrates dismissed the meeting, but they didn’t want to close the case, before they have cleared the names of the alleged accomplices (otherwise the police will come back and get them too). Wéni already caught stealing from elementary school at P:uum, with Kmatpi’s son Tâânki.
Ongoing documentation project, 1995 onwards.
