Description:At Salim's in Kandy
Sri Lanka Malay (SLM) is a restructured vernacular of Malay base spoken by at least five different communities in Sri Lanka which has evolved to be significantly divergent from other varieties of Malay due to intimate contact with the dominant languages of Sinhala and Tamil. The Malays in Sri Lanka, whose ancestry include laborers brought by the Dutch and British, as well as soldiers in the Dutch garrison, now constitute 0.3% of the population, numbering some 46,000. (See Ansaldo 2005, 2006, for more on sociohistorical aspects of SLM.)
Binthan Muumin is an umarried woman who lets the Salims stay in her house when they are in Kandy (i.e. most of the time). She is related to them and is normally called Binthan neene, i.e. Nanny Binthan

Imran Salim is Tony Salim s eldest son. Like his father he is very interested in Malay language and culture. He was the only pupil to take Malay classes in his grade in Kandy, which is how SN met him. He has won a scholarship by Malaysia to go to Malaysia and wants to study there if he is selected.
Izvan Salim is Tony Salim s second son. He follows his brother in his interest for Malay language and culture and studies Std Malay at Kingswood College. He has a very sharp linguistic judgment and is the person currently being trained as a linguistic assistant. Due to an anatomic problem, he cannot pronounce the letter [r] and replaces it by [w].
This uncle is a retired prison guard who spends some days a week at the Salim's. He has a very coughing voice, but a huge vocabulary.
