Description:ENGLISH: A Trumai old man talks about the American anthropologist Buell Quain, who stayed among the Trumai people in 1938 and died a few year later. The Trumai speaker met him in person, and he talks about that, telling curious stories about Quain during his stay with the Trumai people.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The researcher requests the interpreter (Speaker14) to ask his grandfather (Speaker1) about the American anthropologist Buell Quain, who stayed among the Trumai people in 1938 and died a few year later. Speaker1 met him in person, and he talks about that.
The researcher talks in Portuguese. The main narrator talks in Trumai. The interpreters talk in both languages.
There are three main participants: the researcher (RG), the native speaker of Trumai (Speaker1), and the interpreter (Speaker14).
Speaker1 was a native speaker of Trumai. He was considered the best storyteller of the Trumai people. He was also an expert in ritual chants, being very respected by other Xinguan groups. He had knowledge about medicinal plants and roots, and shamanism practices. He was old (above 70) when the died in 1995.
Speaker14 was a native speaker of Trumai. He also spoke Portuguese. He died in November, 2001, because of health problems.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
