The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The session consists of a class in the Trumai language. The teacher shows expressions and sentences in Trumai to this students.
The speakers talk in Trumai.
The class is taught by Speaker17. His students are K, M, and N.
Speaker17 speaks Trumai and Portuguese. Portuguese is his main language. He can understand Trumai very well, but sometimes has difficulties in speaking it. His mother is Trumai, his late father was Kayabi. Speaker17 is the teacher of the Boa Esperança village, and it is considered one of the best teachers of the Xingu reserve. He is very interested in the work of documenting the Trumai language and culture.
Student-K lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-K speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations.
Student-M lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-M speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations.
Student-N lives in the Boa Esperança village. Her father is Trumai, her mother is Suyá. Student-N speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Suyá; she can also understand Trumai, although with limitations.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
