Coverage: | French Polynesia
Description: | Indigenous ru'u chant singing about longing, desire and lost love. The language used in ru'u chant is similar to the Marquesan secret languages. A ru'u was often composed after a significant event in the community. The ru'u therefore had some "moral" view on the event.
Documentation of the various Marquesan dialects spoken on the islands of the Marquesas (French Polynesia). Broad collection of texts and different genres; documented topics include: food and food preparation, plant medicine, story-telling and mythology, trick languages, song and danse, fishing and navigation, aspects of material culture, plants and plant products, local history.
Ga is the linguistic researcher and data collector in the Marquesan DoBeS-project. Ga is a native speaker of German, but has learnt to speak the field language fluently. In many interactions with the Marquesan speech community French is often the contact language.
Mi was born in 1930 and grew up on the island of Nuku Hiva in Ho'oumi with his adoptive father Moa (born in 1901). Mi does not speak French and did not go to school; however, he is not illiterate. Mi is one of the few persons on the Marquesas islands who have a considerable knowledge of the former Marquesan culture, in particular of songs, legends/narratives and dances. He is also one of the few people who can speak Marquesan trick languages fluently. Most of his cultural knowledge was transmitted by his adoptive father.
Ti grew up on Nuku Hiva (Ho'oumi) and came to live on 'Ua Pou at age 18 where she has been living ever since. She mostly speaks the 'Ua Pou vernacular, but sometimes switches to the Nuku Hiva vernacular. She is also very fluent in French. Ti understands Tahitian, but doesn't speak it. Ti knows a lot about plant medicine knowledge passed on by her mother. She knows a number of things about old Marquesan culture through her father (born in 1901).
