Title:Explanation of the word "kuea"
Expl_kuea-Mi
The documentation of the Marquesan languages and culture in French Polynesia
Contributor:GC
Mi
TB
Coverage:French Polynesia
Date:2004-11-06
Description:The project documents several different aspects of the Marquesan culture (legends, narratives, food preparation, plant medicine, fishing techniques, Marquesan trick languages, songs, dances etc.)
In this session the consultant explains the word "kuea meita'i" which is a South Marquesan expression (not existing as such in North Marquesan). It refers to a cutting technique (-> squarely cut) of red tufa apparently originating from the South Marquesas. However, a number of squarly cut stones on historical sites can be seen in the North Marquesas. The word "kuea" is used in the legend of Teiki Nono (see link).
GC is responsable for the Marquesan DOBES project and does all the data collection, data processing and annotation.
Mi was born in 1930 and grew up on the island of Nuku Hiva in Ho'oumi with his adoptive father Moa (born in 1901). Mi does not speak French and did not go to school; however, he is not illiterate. Mi is one of the few persons on the Marquesas islands who have a considerable knowledge of the former Marquesan culture, in particular of songs, legends/narratives and dances. He is also one of the few people who can speak Marquesan trick languages fluently. Most of his cultural knowledge was transmitted by his adoptive father.
TB grew up on Nuku Hiva, but have been living on 'Ua Pou since she turned 17. TB is a fluent bilingual often engaging in French-Marquesan code-switching. In cultural indigenous matters TB was well educated by her father who was born in 1901 and who was very knowledgable about old Marquesan customs, songs, stories etc..
