Description: | In this session the consultants narrate about their life at Moto'ua (Hiva 'Oa) from the 1950s onwards before modernisation set in in the 1970s and 1980s. They talk about their self-sufficiant lives, their diets, school life, travelling on the island, and in particular about birth-giving, treatment with plant medicine after birth and the diets of infants. In the final part they depict life after the 1980s when modernisation set in with electricity, TV, fridges etc. available.
The project documents several different aspects of the Marquesan culture (legends, narratives, food preparation, plant medicine, fishing techniques, Marquesan trick languages, songs, dances etc.)
GC is responsable for the Marquesan DOBES project and does all the data collection, data processing and annotation.
VB is a retired school teacher from Moto'ua, and thus also speaks French fluently. He has not left Moto'ua to live outside the Marquesas during his adult life. He grew up on Ua Huka (North Marquesas). The language of Ua Huka has elements of North as well as South Marquesan as - once desrted in its history - has been resettled from islands in the North (mainly Nuku Hiva) and South (mainly Hiva 'Oa).
Tah is originally from Tahuata, but went to school on Hiva 'Oa. Tah is a fluent bilingual and very knowledgable concerning the Marquesan culture.
WVB has lived most of her life at Moto'ua (Hiva 'Oa) from the 1950s onwards.
