Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986. Recording took place in July (next Sunday it is July 17th, Father's day). This is a broken conversation.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
This is a conversation between Dorian de Haan and 2 girls, Gheeta and Malti (she is not included in Dorian's list). They talk about what they do when they come home after school, with whom they play, the Sarnami language, and a Sarnami Hindustani marriage.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Gheeta is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in Suriname and at the age of 3 she moved to the Netherlands. Currently she is in the last form. At home she is the oldest; she has one younger sister, who is 4. With her parents she speaks Sarnami and Sranan. They hardly speak Dutch at home. However, she finds it easier to speak Dutch. She also speaks a little bit Hindi. She sees herself as Surinamese and she wouldn't want to be Dutch. She's very talkative. She loves Hindu movies. Sandra (Sarnami Hindustani) is her best friend. Same girl as in 3A, 9A, 10L, 10M, 10N, 14A, 18R, 19C, 30C & 34B.
Malti is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in Suriname, where she lived in Kwarta, and moved to the Netherlands in 1979, they put her in the first form of primary school. Currently she is in the last form. Before they moved to Amsterdam, they lived in Arnhem. In Arnhem her mother didn’t allow her to speak Sarnami, now in Amsterdam she may. At home she speaks Sarnami, she can also understand Sranan. She is the middle child of 5 children. Her mother is in the hospital, she is waiting for a new hart. She is not on Dorian’s list of informants.
