Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986. This is a broken conversation. This conversation is continued in DBD DH 034B.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with two girls, Gheeta and Sandra (both Sarnami Hindustani) about the languages they speak and the difference between Sarnami and Hindi, their religion and religious customs/feasts, traveling and what they find difficult/not difficult at school. Gheeta and Sandra are close friends.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Gheeta is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in Suriname and at the age of 3 she moved to the Netherlands. Currently she is in the last form. At home she is the oldest; she has one younger sister, who is 4. With her parents she speaks Sarnami and Sranan. They hardly speak Dutch at home. However, she finds it easier to speak Dutch. She also speaks a little bit Hindi. She sees herself as Surinamese and she wouldn't want to be Dutch. She's very talkative. She loves Hindu movies. Sandra (Sarnami Hindustani) is her best friend. Same girl as in 3A, 9A, 10L, 10M, 10N, 14A, 18R, 19C, 28A & 34B.
Sandra is of Sarnami Hindustani origin and was born in Suriname. She was 3 when she came to the Netherlands in 1975. At home they sometimes speak Sarnami. Sandra doesn't like to speak Sarnami, because she is afraid to make mistakes. With her grandmother (who lives with her family) she always speaks Sarnami. Her mother works at school (unclear whether she is a teacher). Her sister Moniek goes to secondary school. Since a couple of weeks she takes a Hindi language class. Her favorite subject at school is Biology, but she doesn’t like geography. According to her the subject language is easy. Same girl as in 18J, 18K, 18L, 28E, 29A & 34B.
