| Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch. | ||
| Dorian de Haan talks with 2 boys, Jayand and Radjes, about school (which subjects they find difficult/not difficult), what they do when they come home from school, the languages they speak, Hindi language course, religious parties and celebrations, something exciting that happened in their lives, Suriname and school there, their first impression of the Netherlands when they arrived here, and traveling. | ||
| Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department. | ||
| Radjes is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. He was born in Suriname, and has been in the Netherlands for 4 years now. Currently he is in the last form of primary school and next year he wants to go to the LTS. He wants to be a car mechanic. At home he speaks Sarnami. His mother wants her children to speak Dutch, so she can learn the language too. Radjes prefers to speak Sarnami and he finds that his command of Sarnami is better then that of Dutch. His father is homesick for Suriname. He is the 2nd of 6 children. His sister (who is also in the last form of primary school) talks Dutch with their younger siblings. With his Surinamese friends he speaks Surinamese (unclear whether this is Sranan or Sarnami), also at school. According to Radjes swearing and calling names in Sarnami is worse then in Dutch. Same boy as in 4A, 4B, 20F, 20G, 22N, 24F, 26B, 40A & 42B. | ||
| Jayand is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. He was born in Suriname and at the age of 7/8 he came to the Netherlands. His parents went ahead with his brother and sister, Jayand came later with his grandparents. He went to the first grade of primary school, currently he is in the last grade. At home they speak Sarnami; this is the language which he prefers to speak. He takes Hindi language classes. His father gives Suriname music and theater shows. Jayand is not on Dorian’s list of informants. | ||
