Description: | Netra was requested by the participants to record this session. This session is on the Dressing ceremony of a Chintang Child. When a child gets of 6 months, then new dress is offered to him or her. This is a common kiranti culture. The recording took place inside the house and there was no light, so the recordings are not too clear.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.
This text is about the dressing ceremony in Chintang culture. It is also noted that this is not the native chintang culture. It is borrwed from Brahmin or Chettri. The Wattong blesses and others put tika on the Child's forehead. As this is not originally chintang culture there are dozens of words borrowed from Nepali.
Chintang and Nepali two languages are used in this session.
Netra is the collector and Prakash and Sita are the participants of this session.
Prakash works as a farmer in Chintang. He and his parents are native Chintang.
She was born and brought up in Chintang. Both she and her parents have Chintang as the first native language. She has never left the area for long time.
I completed Masters Degree in Linguistics from Tribhuvan University, and currently working as a Research Assistant in the (DOBES) project. I am in charge of Linguistic works and analysis.
