Description: | This ritual for Cuwamang ('Water deity') is part of the rite called "mang sudharne", lit. 'correcting' the deities, or 'curing'. The ritual was performed due to illness in the house of Jagat B . This recording took place inside the house, so the recording is not of best quality. | |
It is the worship of the Cuwamang. Cuwamang is worshipped by special clans, namely, Tuprihang, Anada, Angbura. It is worshipped near the Budhahang and the Palawa. It has its own temporary altar, in which one calabash and one pair of banana leaf are needed. It was performed on the occasion of correction worship. It is worshipped with chanting the mundum by knowledgeable elders. Eggs are offered to it. It is a worship, which is related to water. Water is taken as the god in this worship. In the mythology of the Chintang, there was a person, whose name was Arihang. He had a son, whose name was Dhilungtang Kurinahang Pe?wahang and killed by his uncle in the river. After some years, Arihang got one son again, whose name was Rangtumpa and offspring of the Rangtupa worship water as the god. It is worshipped by the special clans called Tuprihang, Ananda, Angbura. | ||
This is a chant in the ritual language used by Chintang ritual experts. It is different from ordinary language so a few knowledgeable elders canspeak and understand partly. Its basic character is binomial. | ||
The ritual was performed at the house of Jagat Bahadur, who is both the householder and acting priest. BBR was called as a knowledgeable elder (wattong). | ||
He is member of the Tuprihang clan. Like his elder brother BhB he is a Chambak, i.e. a tribal shaman, who goes into trance during certain occasion. | ||
He is member of the Arihang clan. He know nothing about the mundhum but he follows what the knowledgeable elders say. In this worship, he is both householder and priest. | ||
