Description: | The speaker cites and explains a proverb of the Chintang people.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote, Devisthan and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
This is one of the few Chintang proverbs we could record. Literally it goes "The eyes are over there, the hand in the garlic garden"
the session is in Chintang, with some Nepali words.
During a get together for recording a story we also recorded this proverb performance.
The actor is one of the elders in the hamlet of Sambhugaun. He is a member of the Khamla clan (Bantawa) and though he is an adherent of the Kabir panth he is very knowledgeable about Chintang culture.
Dr. Gaenszle is the researcher in charge of ethnography.
He works as research assistant for the ethnographic documentation of Chintang speech traditions.
He is the linguistic expert for the Chintang team.
