The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. The description of the Puma marriage related with the Bulu batuko, a small metal bowl which plays an important role in the Puma marriage.The bowl should be taken to the house of bride. A hen's blood is put into a bulukhung, a small bowl and is taken to the bride's home. | ||
Puma language has been used throughout in this session with occasional words and phrases of Bantawa and Nepali languages. | ||
The speaker is a Puma native speaker. He is very much interested in preserving Puma language and culture. The girl in the picture is his daughter. | ||
He is the research assistant for ethnography in the Puma team. | ||
Mr Cakra Bahadur Rai (Thumrahang) a knowledgeable man who is also a Puma shaman. | ||
