Description:This is the fourth session of second recording cycle of the child, Kamala in the Child Language Development study.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
In this session, Kamala's mother has just come from the corn field. Aroung 00:08, her mother hangs a piece of wood with a rope and mother go to the field again and the children including with Kamala play with the hanging object. Around 00:29, there is adult talking but we had not transcribed at that time, we transcribed just the utterances uttered by the target child and to the target child by the others. Total utterances =530 Total utterances by Kamala =195 Total utterances by Kamala - COMM=195-113=82 Others' utterances to Kamala =530-195=335 Others' utterances -COMM = 335-105=230 Adult to adult utterances =0 Note: the transcription is only focused on the target child. So, the utterances which are not related to the child are not transcribed.
Exect only a few Nepali utterances, all of them are in Chintang language.
Kamala is the target child, Harki Maya is her mother's mother, Phul Maya is her mother, Ganga, Sun Kumari, Krishna, Ashu are her elder sibling, Parbati and Lal Bahadur are the neighbours, and Goma is the collector and the annotator of this session.
Ash Kumari Rai is the elder sister of Kamala Rai and the daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is the fifth daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is known as 'antari' at her home. She is the fifth daughter of her parents.She often stays at home. She sometimes goes to the school.
Krishna Kumari is also called 'Kise' in her family. She is the elder sister of Kamala Rai and the daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is the third child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class two.
Sun Kumari is the elder sister of Kamala and the daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is the fourth child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class one. She takes care of Kamala in her mother's absence.
Samjhana is the eldest sister of Kalpana. She is a student. She is reading in class 3. She helps her parents in the household works also.
Phul Maya Rai is known as 'Khukkhangma kainli' in the village. She is Khukkhang and married to Sangpang. She is the mother of our target child, Kamala Rai. She has 6 daughters. She is a housewife and a farmer as well.

Kamala is the youngest daughter of her parents. She has five elder sisters. Kamala is known as 'kanchi' at her family and in the village.
Harki Maya is the mother's mother of Child2, Kamala Rai and father's mother of the child1, Khem Kumar Rai. Her house is 10 minutes from Kamala's house.
Ganga is the elder sister of Kamala Rai. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class 3.
