Description:It is an oral narrative by an elder (LR) from Sambugaũ on the origin of Chintang clans.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote, Devisthan and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
It is a small narrative on the division of clans among Chintang Rai of Sambugãu. It describes them as being the offspring of a forefather called Sambhong (Sambong) who settled in the area.
LB talked about the clans of Chintang in the Chintang language.
Collectors (IR and MG) were in Chintang and met him (LB) and requested him to discuss about Chintang clans.
The actor is one of the elders in the hamlet of Sambhugaun. He is a member of the Khamla clan (Bantawa) and though he is an adherent of the Kabir panth he is very knowledgeable about Chintang culture.
Dr. Gaenszle is the researcher in charge of ethnography
He works as research assistant for the ethnographic documentation of Chintang speech traditions.
