Description:This is the 5th session of the 9th monthly recording cycle of the child Kalpana for the Child Language Development study.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Kalpana's mother makes Kalpana comb her (Kalpana's) hair and Kalpana weeps.
The conversation is in Chintang language in general.
Kalpana is the target child, Prithvi and Ranjana are her elder siblings, Anita is her mother, Ashu and Sun Kumari are her cousin. Puspa is their neighbour and our local informant. Goma is the collector and the annotator of this session.
Puspa is the neighbour of all our target children in Chintang. She is our local assistant as well. She has passed class 10.
Anita Rai is the mother of the child, Kalpana. She is a housewife and a farmer. Sometimes she goes to work in others' farming field on wage.
Sun Kumari is the elder sister of Kamala. She is the fourth child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class one. She takes care of Kamala in her mother's absence.
Ash Kumari Rai is the elder sister of Kamala Rai and the fifth daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is also called Ash Kumari. She is the fifth daughter of her parents.She often stays at home. She sometimes goes to the school.
Ranjana is the elder sister of Kalpana. She is also called Ranje. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class 1. She caretakes her sister Kalpana in her mother's absence. She is also the daughter of Kamala's father's younger brother.
Kamala is the youngest daughter of her parents. She has five elder sisters.
Prithvi Narayan is the elder brother of Kalpana. He is also called Perte and Pecce. He is the only one son in his family. He sometimes goes to school with his elder siblings. He is Kamala's father's younger brother's son.
Kalpana is the youngest child of her parents. She has three elder siblings. She is the daughter of Kamala's father's younger brother.
