Description:Fourth session of thirteenth monthly recording cycle with Kalpana (child 3 of Child Language Development Study).
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote, Devisthan and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Both these districts are situated in the eastern hilly part of the country.http://www.cpdp.uzh.ch
Something is being beaten in the background, possibly rice. Kalpana, her father and her elder siblings talk about the book. There is a little talk between Rikhimaya, our language consultant and Kalpana's father about medicine and the health of the kids. Her father looks for lice on Kalpana's head. Prithvi sings Nepali rhymes at the end of the session.
The conversation is in Chintang and there are many Nepali rhymes (more than 50) sung in this session.
Kalpana is our target child, Anita is her mother, Mekh Bahadur is her father, Ranjana, Samjhana and Prithvi are her elder siblings. Rikhi Maya is their neighbour and our language consultant. Manoj is the collector of the session.
Prithvi Narayan, also called 'Perte' and 'Pecce', is the elder brother of Kalpana. He is Kamala's cousin (younger paternal uncle's son). He is the only son of his parents. He sometimes goes to school with his elder siblings.
Ranjana, also called 'Ranje' is the elder sister of Kalpana. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student in 1st grade. She takes care of her sister Kalpana in their mother's absence. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle).
He is a native speaker of Chintang and research assistant in the CPDP project. He is M.Ed. in English Education. He is Khem's neighbour. His home is an hour away from our target children Man Kumar and Saphal. He belongs to the Bolana clan of Chintang Rai. He is a research assistant in the Chintang language research team.
Mekh Bahadur, also known as 'Mekhe sainla', is the father of Kalpana. He has four children, whom he loves very much. He is a farmer and a porter as well. He is the younger brother of Kamala's father.
Rikhi Maya Rai was born and brought up in Chintang, Mulgaun. She works as one of our regular language consultants and has been working as a research collaborator helping with grammatical analysis, transcriptions and translations. She is a college student doing a BEd in English and was in the third year when the project started. Both she and her parents are Chintang native speakers, but they are Bantawa by ethnicity. She has never left the area for a longer time.
Samjhana, also called 'Samje' and 'Jethi', is the eldest sister of Kalpana. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle). She is a student in 3rd grade. She helps her parents in the household, too.
Anita Rai is the mother of Kalpana. She is a housewife and a farmer. Sometimes she goes to work on wage in other farmer's fields. She is from the Khukkhang clan of the Chintang and has married a Sangpang.
Our target child Kalpana, also called 'Kanchi' at home, is the youngest child of her parents and has three elder siblings. She is Kamala's cousin (daughter of younger paternal uncle).
