Description:This is the 1st session of the 9th monthly recording cycle of the child1, Khem for the Child Language Development study.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote, Devisthan and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Playing on veranda with elder brother Ram , teasing, they play with a necklace and they compete about it. 2 girls are sitting on the veranda as well not facing the camera, they talk among themselves. (first 10 minutes) Play with tools (mill stone). Some talk among the boys, more by the other boy. K. handles a basket. Some conversation about it with the woman, (which came back) and the other boy.
The conversation is in Chintang in general.
Khem is the target child, Ram and Indra are his elder siblings. Puspa is their neighbour and intimate friend of Indra, and our local informant. Tek Bahadur and Surya are the boys from the near by next village, Chhetri gaun. Goma is the collector and the annotator of this session.
Puspa is the neighbour of all our target children in Chintang. She is our local assistant as well. She has passed class 10.
Ram is the elder brother of Khem and the son of Kamala's mother's elder brother. He is the fifth child of his parents. He is a student. He reads in class two.
Khem Kumar Rai is our target child. He is the 6th child in his family. He has two elder sisters, three elder brothers and one younger sister.
She is the eldest sister of Khem. She is a student. She reads in class 9. She helps her parents in the household works and in farming.
Assistant researcher in Child Language Acquisition and Child Language Development
Tek Bahadur lives in Chintang VDC, Ward No. 6. His home is about 1 hour far from Khems'. He has come there to watch what we record.
Surya lives in Chintang VDC, Ward No. 6. His home is just half an hour away from the Khem's home. He is a student. He reads in class 10.
