Description:This is the 8th session of the 11th monthly recording cycle of the child3, Kalpana for the study, 'Child Language Development'.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Kalpana scolds Prithvi. Kalpana lets Samjhana eat her rice. Samjhana makes Kalpana wear shoes. Kalpana's father cuts Kalpana's nails with a blade. Total utterance = 345 Total Kalpana's utterances = 138 Total Kalpana's utterances (-communicators) = 138-17 =121 Total others' utterances to Kalpana = 345 -138=207 Others' utterances to Kalpana (-communicators) = 207- 15 = 192 Adult to adult utterances (AA) = 0
Except a few utterances in Nepali, the utterances in the whole session are in Chintang language.
In this session, there are altogether 7 participants. Among them, Kalpana is the target child, Mekh Bahadur is her father, Samjhana, Ranjana and Prithvi are her elder siblings, Khel Bahadur is a neighbour and our occassional local assistant in child language recordings and Goma is the collector and the annotator of the session.
Samjhana is also called 'Samje' and 'Jethi'. She is the eldest sister of Kalpana. She is a student. She is reading in class 3. She helps her parents in the household works also.
Ranjana is the elder sister of Kalpana. She is also called Ranje and maĩli. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class 1. She caretakes her sister Kalpana in her mother's absence. She is also the daughter of Kamala's father's younger brother.
Mekh Bahadur is also known as 'Mekhe saĩla' in Chintang. He is the father of Kalpana. He has four children. He loves his children very much. He is a farmer and a porter as well. He is also the younger brother of Kamala's father.
Prithvi Narayan is the elder brother of Kalpana. He is also called Perte and Pecce. He is the only one son in his family. He sometimes goes to school with his elder siblings. He is Kamala's father's younger brother's son.
Kalpana is the youngest child of her parents. She has three elder siblings. She is the daughter of Kamala's father's younger brother. She is also called Kalpe and Kanchi. Her mother is Khukkhang (a clan of Chintang) and her father is Sangpang.

Khel Bahadur is the elder brother of Khem. He is the second child of his parents. He is a student. He studies in class 5. Sometimes he also assists in child language recording. He is the son of Kamala's maternal uncle and neighbour of all our target children. His father is Khukkhang and mother is Teli Rai, both Khukkhang and Teli belog to the Chintang clan.
