Description:This is the third session of the first monthly recording cycle of the child3, Kalpana of the Child Language Development study.
The aim of the project is to provide a rich linguistic and ethnographic documentation of two highly endangered but almost totally undocumented languages in eastern Nepal, Chintang and Puma. These languages belong to the Kiranti family of Tibeto-Burman. Chintang is spoken by the Chintang Rai in Chintang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Dhankuta district. Puma is spoken by the Puma Rai in Diplung, Mauwabote and Pauwasera VDCs, to the south of Khotang bazar in Khotang district. Kalpana is playing with her siblings and eating millet rice in the kitchen. Many people are present there. In this session, Total utterances = 193 Total utterances spoken by Kalpana = 54 Total utterances (-COMM) spoken by Kalpana = 54-21 =33 Other's utterances spoken in the presence of Kalpana = 193 - 54 = 139
At first she plays out side wearing slippers, Man Kumari asks her about the slippers. Later, she plays with a small plant near and front upside of her home and then she enters home asking meal (dhĩdo) and Samjhana gives her dhĩdo, then Kalpana and Abhisan (neighbouring child) eat the food. The session is very interesting. (But we have transcribed just the utterances for the target child and by the target child) In this session, Total utterances = 193 Total utterances spoken by Kalpana = 54 Total utterances (- COMM) spoken by Kalpana =54-18 =36 Others' utterances spoken with Kalpana =193 - 54 =149
All the utterances in Chintang except a few Nepali utterances.
Kalpana is the target child, Mekh Bahadur is her father, prithvi, Ranjana and Samjhana are her elder siblings. Krishna Bahadur, Gita and Durga are the neighbours. Abhisan is a neighbouring son, Gita's son.
Kalpana is the youngest child of her parents and the daugheter of Kamala's father's younger brother. She is also called 'kanchi' at her home. She has three elder siblings.

Prithvi Narayan is the elder brother of Kalpana. He is also called Perte and Pecce. He is the only one son in his family. He sometimes goes to school with his elder siblings. He is Kamala's father's younger brother's son.
Ranjana is the elder sister of Kalpana. She is also called Ranje. She is the second child of her parents. She is a student. She reads in class 1. She caretakes her sister Kalpana in her mother's absence. She is also the daughter of Kamala's father's younger brother.
Ash Kumari Rai is the elder sister of Kamala Rai and the daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is the fifth daughter of Kalpana's father's elder brother. She is known as 'antari' at her home. She is the fifth daughter of her parents.She often stays at home. She sometimes goes to the school.
Samjhana is the eldest sister of Kalpana. She is a student. She is reading in class 3. She helps her parents in the household works also.
He is known as Lekali. He is a neighbour. His home is 3 minutes upside away from Kalpana's. He is a farmer. He most often takes care of his grandson.
Mekh Bahadur is also known as 'Mekhe sainla' in Chintang. He is the father of Kalpana. He has four children. He loves his children very much. He is a farmer and a porter as well. He is also the younger brother of Kamala's father.
He is the neighbouring child, son of Gita.
Man Kumari is also known as 'saĩli' in her family and in her neighbourhood. She is Yupuchung, a clan of Bantawa Rai. She is the neighbour of our target children families. She is our local assistant as well. She is a student. She has passed class ten.
She is a neighbour of Kalpana's and Kamala's family. She is a housewife and a farmer as well. Her home is downside and near to Kalpanas'.
