| Totoli is a language of northern Central Sulawesi still spoken by at most 5000 speakers. Although it is commonly named as a member of the Tomini-Tolitoli group, its genetic affiliation is unclear. It has some apparently unique structural characteristics which are of central importance to the history of Austronesian valency changing systems (voice and applicatives). While the Totoli speech community nowadays is a Muslim society adhering to the values and aspirations of the modern Indonesian mainstream, the older speakers still master a broad variety of verbal arts, including a form of verbal battling called “lelegesan”. In this project a special effort is being made to include conversational materials in the documentation as this genre is mostly missing in the existing documentations of minority languages in Indonesia. Another aim is a contribution to capacity building in the domain of language documentation through local and national workshops in Indonesia. | ||
| A women at a "syukuran" party is asked by WN to describe the different dishes that are traditionally served at this festivity. First she just points on some of the dishes and tells their names, later she is asked directly by WN on particular dishes and their names/functions. | ||

| Jaliha is the grandmother of Mei and in some way related to the Rahmat family in Kalangkangan. She has a full knowledge of the Totoli language, also speaks Indonesian. | ||
| WN is last but one of seven siblings. Unmarried in 2005. Has been living in Palu for the last 8-10 years. Both parents are Totoli but at home mostly Indonesian was used. He has a reasonably good passive competence in Totoli, but active competence somewhat limited. Son of Salim Alamudi, brother of Hasnawati S. Alamudi, brother-in-law of Gusti Rahmat | ||
| CL is PhD student in this documentation project and conducts most of the fieldwork in Indonesia. | ||
| Mei is a young mother for whose first son the "syukuran"-ceremony was held. She mostly speaks Indonesian but has at least a passive knowledge of Totoli also. | ||
