Date:1762
Description:The Sranan version of the Saramaka Peace Treaty records the contents of the treaty as it was read to the Saramaka Maroons on September 19, 1762, at the junction of Sara Creek and Suriname River. It also discloses the Saramaka replies to the treaty. This document was rediscovered in the archives by the Dutch anthropologist Wim Hoogbergen (Hoogbergen & Polimé 2000). Arends & Van den Berg (2004) produced a more accurate transcription that is available on the internet, including scans of the original text, see http://www.creolica.net. Both texts were recorded by Louis Nepveu (a relative of Jan Nepveu), who was the colonial government's delegate to the negotiations. In the opening lines of the text, Loius Nepveu is identified as the author. Both texts represent second language varieties of Early Sranan, as Louis Nepveu is assumed to have spoken Dutch and perhaps French natively and the Saramaka Maroons, of course, Saramaccan. Moreover, due to the formal setting and the official status of the document, the recorded variety is most likely a rather formal variety of Early Sranan.
From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens.

Louis Nepveu was the colonial government's delegate to the negotiations. In the opening lines of the text, Louis Nepveu is identified as the author: 'Gramman langa coertoe sendie masara Loúis Nepveú foú meki da fri. A poti alle dissi santi deja na inni gi dem foe bakisi dem effi dem wandi holli dati alle.' 'The Governor and the Court of Police have sent Mr. Louis Nepveu to conclude the treaty. He wrote all these things down for them in order to ask them if they are willing to stick to all these agreements.' Both texts represent second language varieties of Early Sranan, as Louis Nepveu is assumed to have spoken Dutch and perhaps French natively and the Sarmaka Maroons, or fourse, Saramaccan.
