Description: | Jan or Jean Nepveu (1709-1779; born in Amsterdam) is the author of the corrections of Herlein's (1718) Sranan fragment, titled 'Annotatien op de Surinaamsche Beschrijvinge van A 1718' (1770)'. The Sranan material covers about nine pages in the 400 page long manuscript, that was intented to become a revised edition of Herlein's (1718) book. A draft version appeared in 1765, containing six pages of Sranan material (Arends 1995, Voorhoeve & Lichtveld 1975). Both versions include one page of corrections of Herlein's (1718) text, that are identical (Arends 1995: 19). Nepveu went to Suriname in 1734, when he was about fifteen years old. He held several public offices; from 1770 tot he day he died in 1779, he was governor of Suriname. More biographical information in the life of Jan Nepveu is found in Arends (1995: 17 - 19).
From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens.

Nepveu had been in Suriname for thirty years at the time of the publication of the draft version. Thus, he must have been fluent in the 'bakratongo' variety of Early Sranan, in particular the 'bakratongo' variety spoken by the Europeans in the city ('fototongo).
