The Early Surinamese Creoles in the Suriname Creole Archive
Contributor (author): | J. Arends

Coverage: | Suriname | |
Date: | 1765 | |
Description: | The book was published by the heirs of the widow of Jacobus van Egmont in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and clearly intended for Dutch readership. The total number of pages is 112: 15 pages of vocabulary; 3 pages of common expressions; 24 pages of dialogues numbered one to twelve, and a play about a Suriname coffee plantation manager and his slaves (66 pages), a title page and a dedication. The validity of the book is strenghtened in a number of ways. For example, the author announces on the title page of the book that it is based on many years of trial and experience. Furthermore, he dedicates the book to Tepper, whom van Dyk introduces as his friend and eye witness to the events portrayed in the play. Furthermore the Dutch translation contains forms that are typical of a colloquial variety of Dutch rather than a formal variety (Van der Wal 1998), including the copula form 'binnen' instead of 'zyn' and the use of the form 'myn' instead of 'my' as the first person singular indirect object pronoun.
From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens.
