Description:I recorded many songs of Dengbej Remezan.
This archive is under creation as part of my Ph.D. project "The dynamics of Kurdish folk music and its performers, expressions of identity in Eastern Turkey" at LIAS and the department of Cultural Anthropology, Leiden University, Holland. The data presented in the archive consists mainly out of interviews with singers and recordings of performances, which I collected in 2004, 2007 and 2008 in Turkey (and some of it in Germany). The first aim of this research was not to collect linguistic data, but to give an impression of a tradition that is on the verge of disappearance. However, the data may be useful for linguistic research as well. The recordings are taken in many different towns and villages in eastern Turkey, in various dialects and languages. Most of the singers are of old age, and are fluent speakers of their mothertongue. Many young Kurds in Turkey do not speak their mother tongue fluently anymore, as they grew up in an environment where Turkish was dominant. The language of stories and songs is often archaic and difficult to understand for them. Because of the loss of language knowledge I believe that it is particularly relevant to archive language use of elderly speakers. This archive is one of the attempts to do so.
Summary of the song: About the love of a girl. The girl says to Şêrîn: Şêrîn I am ill. Şêrîn I would sacrifice myself for you, I need to go. The girl says: Şêrîn went to the river Şekir Şêrîn: may I see fish there (he invites her in this way to come to the river) The girl: Şêrîn I am not a fish (which means, I will not come to the river). But in the water Şêrîn changes. The girl: ŞêrînI am not a duck. Şêrîn changes again. The girl: I am the gazelle of the Şengal mountain, I do not come until I find the one who will ride me. Above us are clouds, around us are people, under us is an endless deep hole, around us are wind and storm. At the end the girl talks about her death, she says: they brought me and gave me to the grave. They heaped stones and twines on top of me.
Keçik ji şêrîn re dibêje: Şêrîn heyran ez nexweşim. Şêrîn qurban ezê rabim herim. Şêrîn heyra çuye ber çemê Şekira digot bila masî derkeve. Kêçik jî ji şêrin re dibêje şêrîno ez ne masî me. Lê di nav golê de şêrîn guharî. Şêrîn ez ne werdek im. Şêrîn dîsa guharî. (Di vir de keçik behsa xweşikbûna xwe ji Şêrîn re dike.) îcar keçik dibêje ez xezalê çiya Şengalê me, hetanî çeleksiwarê xwe nebînim ezê neyê me. Keçik ji evîna xwe ji Şêrîn re dibêje: niha ser serê me ewr e, binê me gola bê binî ye. Derdora me ba û bahoz e. Dawiyê de keçik behsa mirina xwe dike dibêje min birin teslîmê qebrê kirin. Kevir û çilo jî li ser min zêde kirin.
Dengbej Remezan is from a village near Hazro. His family lived from farming. When he was 12 years old they moved to Diyarbakir. He learned Dengbeji from his father and from cassettes of Sidiqê Karliova. He used to accompany his father to weddings where he performed.
