Description:Elicitation session by Saskia with three students at the Junior Secondary School. First, some body part terms were elicited. Then the children described the 'run, walk, crawl, climb' videos. Finally the children interviewed each other about activities, one of them gave a recipe and they each described the routes to their houses. The session has been audio recorded and annotated in ELAN.
The Avatime project aims to describe and document Avatime. The researchers involved in this project are Rebecca Defina and Saskia van Putten. The project included fieldwork in Ghana in 2008 and was completed in 2009. Outcomes of the project are: (1) audio and video recordings of different genres, of which 13,5 hours have been transcribed and annotated, (2) an Avatime-English wordlist, (3) grammar notes and (4) two Master's theses, one on the expression of motion in Avatime (Saskia van Putten) and one on aspect and mood in Avatime (Rebecca Defina).
First, Saskia asks the children for words for some objects and some parts of the body, by asking in Avatime 'what is this?'. Then, she shows the children the 'run walk crawl climb' videos. This is a set of videos which show mainly moving animals and some moving people. After each video Saskia asked the children in Avatime 'what happened'. Then she asked Ernest to interview the other two about what they did yesterday, what they are going to do tomorrow and what they want to do in the future. Charity also gave a recipe. Finally, each of the children gave directions to their houses.
Avatime was used mostly, but Saskia sometimes used English to explain something and Ernest translated some of the things the other two children said into English for Saskia.
Charity, Ernest and Elvis are the consultants in this session, which was led by Saskia. Their responses to the run_walk_crawl_climb video clips were annotated by Saskia. The interviews were transcribed and translated by Da Adzo and Rebecca.
Da Adzo was one of our main consultants. She has helped us transcribe and translate recordings, helped us in elicitation sessions and gave us cultural information. She was born in Vane, moved to Accra after she got married and moved back to Vane at 62.
Charity is a student at the Junior Secondary School in Vane. She was born in Vane and grew up there.
Elvis is a student at the Junior Secondary School in Vane. He was born in Vane and still lives there.
Ernest is a student at the Junior Secondary School in Vane. He was born in Vane and still lives there.
Rebecca Defina is one of the researchers in this project. She did her bachelors in Linguistics and Mathematics at the University of Sydney and her research master in Linguistics at Leiden University. She started PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 2010. She grew up in Australia and now lives in the Netherlands.
Saskia van Putten is one of the researchers in this project. She did her bachelor in Languages and Cultures of Africa and her research master in Linguistics, both at Leiden University. She started PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 2009. Saskia grew up and still lives in the Netherlands.
The recording was made using a Marantz PMD flash recorder. The recording is mono, 16 bit and 48 kHz.
Toolbox file created from ELAN file in which recording was annotated.
This file includes the transcription of the words elicited at the beginning of the session, the run_walk_crawl_climb videos and the interviews about activities.
Three files have been cut out from this recording: - dir-house_CB - dir-house_EK - dir-house_ED The run_walk_crawl_climb elicitation set has been developed by researchers involved in the motion encoding in language project at NTNU.
