Description: | This recording was recorded in Feb. 2004.
The overall goal of the project is the documentation and preservation of the Hoocąk language. The project therefore includes the following sub-projects: (1) (audio- and video-)recording, analysing, processing and archiving a representative corpus of Hoocąk texts, (2) linguistic analysis and representation of texts that have previously been recorded by other linguists or anthropologists, (3) development of a comprehensive and linguistically consistent lexicon, (4) training of Hoocąk language instructors, (5) development of teaching material (6) further analyses (e.g. investigation of dialectal differences among Wisconsin and Nebraska Hoocąks)
Twins being responsible for the land of the Hoocąks chased a bad waterspirit (=dragon) into the water to free a Hoocąk princess captured by it. The twins then killed the waterspirit and used the blood to draw pictures (portraying the killing) on a rock/hill that is now called "the place you draw".
The actors knew each other before the recording.
FS19 works closely together with FS18. They are Hoocąk language instructors and teach at the Hoocąk House of Wellness as well as at the Casino in Baraboo. They often assisted us and are considered to be very good speakers of the Hoocąk language.

NJ's first language is German. He is also fluent in English and has very little knowledge of Hoocąk. He left the documentation project in Jan. 2007.
MS28 was born in 1942 in Tomah, WI. He used to work as language instructor employed by the Hoocąk Language Center (HLC) in Mauston, WI and retired in 2005. MS28 is a traditionalist. He has some experience as consultant (K) but the Hoocąk documentation team hardly worked with him.
