Description:The story was recorded indoors. The speaker was addressing an audience knowing that he was being recorded.
The overall goal of the project is the documentation and preservation of the Hoocąk language. The project therefore includes the following sub-projects: (1) (audio- and video-)recording, analysing, processing and archiving a representative corpus of Hoocąk texts, (2) linguistic analysis and representation of texts that have previously been recorded by other linguists or anthropologists, (3) development of a comprehensive and linguistically consistent lexicon, (4) training of Hoocąk language instructors, (5) development of teaching material (6) further analyses (e.g. investigation of dialectal differences among Wisconsin and Nebraska Hoocąks)
There are two speakers: MS31 and MS14. MS31 introduces MS14 who then explains the importance of the Hoocąk documentation project to future Hoocąk generations and acknowledges the efforts made by the project team members and the consultants.
Hoocąk is the only language used in this session.
MS14 has been a Hoocąk language instructor (in Tomah) for years now.
JL has been concerned with the Hoocąk language since 2003 and has gained experience in field research.
MS10 is fluent in Hoocąk and English. MS10 works as Hoocąk language instructor at the Hoocąk Language Center. He has been consulted numerous times to help transcribe or analyze texts. There are only a few recordings with MS10.
FS4 works as multimedia specialist at the Hoocąk Language Division and has made many cultural recordings of which some now are part of the corpus of the documentation project. He is also responsible for archiving recordings related to Hoocąk language and culture.
MS31 has been the head of the Hoocąk Waaziija Haci Language Division in Mauston, Wi since 2000 and is considered to be a very good speaker of the language. He had some experience in story telling.
