Description: | The overall goal of the project is the documentation and preservation of the Hoocąk language. The project therefore includes the following sub-projects: (1) (audio- and video-)recording, analysing, processing and archiving a representative corpus of Hoocąk texts, (2) linguistic analysis and representation of texts that have previously been recorded by other linguists or anthropologists, (3) development of a comprehensive and linguistically consistent lexicon, (4) training of Hoocąk language instructors, (5) development of teaching material (6) further analyses (e.g. investigation of dialectal differences among Wisconsin and Nebraska Hoocąks)
This passage is about the wolf going to grandmother's house. There he is imitating Little Red Riding Hood's voice to get in. While he is still pretending to be the granddaughter (by wearing a red blanket) the grandmother starts singing a song (that Little Red Riding Hood is doing good and that she's old now). All seven passages are partly sung and are always preceded by few sentences narrating the story.
Hoocąk is the primary language used in this session. However, there are some sentences in English at the beginning of the text (following the greeting) that explain why the text is being produced.
MS4 is our main consultant and a highly respected elder and Hoocąk speaker. He worked for the movie industry (Hollywood) for 40 years as an actor. MS4 appears in several recordings.
FS4 works as multimedia specialist at the Hoocąk Language Division and has made many cultural recordings of which some now are part of the corpus of the documentation project. He is also responsible for archiving recordings related to Hoocąk language and culture.
FS18 works closely together with FS19. They are Hoocąk language instructors and teach at the Hoocąk House of Wellness as well as at the Casino in Baraboo. They often assist us and are considered to be very good speakers of the Hoocąk language.

IH's first language is German. She is fluent in English and has good knowledge of Hoocąk.
MS5 died in 1997. It is said that he taught the language in Wisconsin and Nebraska using computers, video tapes and traditional oral teaching at feasts, hot stone, scalp dances and other times/occasions. He was interested in preserving the traditional religion. MS5 was a cultural advisor to the Burial Mounds Committee and to the State Historical Prservation Committee. He also was a tribal chairman of the WWBC. MS5 used to work as a health professional. His linguistic contribution was a short dictionary. He also was a veteran, and enjoyed hunting as well as fishing. In short, he was a respected tribal member and was very engaged in tribal politics.
