Coverage:Ghana
Date:2008-11-20
Description:Mathias Mahunu and Rebecca Defina visited Grete Ebedi at her house in the afternoon and interviewed her about various topics. Her granddaughter was nearby behind the camera preparing fufu and she occasionally commented on what was being said. During the interview her husband came and sat next to her. This is the first section of the interview and has been cut from the larger recording. In this section Grete talks about her family and how Vane has changed. The time in space experiment can be found in the full recording and her giving directions can be found in interview_MM-GE_cut_dir-Gayie.
The Avatime project aims to describe and document Avatime. The researchers involved in this project are Rebecca Defina and Saskia van Putten. The project included fieldwork in Ghana in 2008 and was completed in 2009. Outcomes of the project are: (1) audio and video recordings of different genres, of which 13,5 hours have been transcribed and annotated, (2) an Avatime-English wordlist, (3) grammar notes and (4) two Master's theses, one on the expression of motion in Avatime (Saskia van Putten) and one on aspect and mood in Avatime (Rebecca Defina).
Mathias asks Grete to talk about her children and grandchildren and when they were born. He also asks her about how Vane has changed and how she thinks it will change in the future.
Both Mathias's question and Grete's responses are given in Avatime. Rebecca and Mathias occasionally speak in English.
Mathias questions Grete. Grete responds.
Grete is an elderly woman who lives in Vane with her husband, some of her children and grandchildren. She was born during the German occupation of the Avatime lands, hence the German name.
Manfred Apati is an old man (65+) living in Fume. He is a member of the language committee founded by the GILLBT (SIL) group. He has followed a few linguistics / translation courses with GILLBT. He writes Avatime very well and has independently transcribed and translated many recordings for us.
Mathias is a Senior High School student in Vane.
Rebecca Defina is one of the researchers in this project. She did her bachelors in Linguistics and Mathematics at the University of Sydney and her research master in Linguistics at Leiden University. She started PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 2010. She grew up in Australia and now lives in the Netherlands.
This audio file was extracted from the video recording.
The recording was made using a JVC Everio digital video camera. The file is saved in MPEG2 format with 3400 kbps video encoding rate and 256 kbps audio encoding rate. The aspect ratio is 4:3 and the size of the video is 352 x 576. It is recorded in PAL format.
This interview is from the beginning of a longer interview interview_MM-GE and is the third of a series of interviews conducted by Mathias and Rebecca in the afternoon on the 20/11/2008. See interview_MM-FO and interview_MM-SM for the first two interviews in this series.
