Description:CL and NB arrive with the interpreters DF and SNY in Nko'olong and greet the people. Everybody is getting ready for the hike into the forest. A group of a few young men, two elderly women and several children is leaving the village together with the DoBeS researchers. Their first stop outside the village is the former location of the settlement. NkNaMa explains that her parents lived there before, but that the Bulu forced them to live on the road which they are doing since then. She also shows the tombs of her ancestors which they call "paradise".
The Bakola project aims at documenting the Bakola/Bagyeli language as it is spoken in everyday conversation. The linguistic documentation of Bakola will focus on three major domains: 1. audio recordings (narrative, procedural, hortative, expository, conversations, epics, songs, folktales, proverbs, etc.) 2. video recordings (dances, storytelling events, songs, procedural discourse, and basic conversational situations such as greetings, daily activities, food gathering, etc.) 3. the elicitation of specialized vocabulary (plant and animal names, herbalist and hunting techniques as well as stories, music and rituals to build relationships among humans and with the spiritual world)
CL and NB arrive with the interpreters DF and SNY in Nko'olong and greet the people. They are welcomed by the children who sing songs they've randomly heard on the radio and whose meaning they do not understand at all. The she goes on to explain that the leaf she has around her finger will prevent the rain from falling. The group continues into the forest where NkDoRe shows a type of nut the Bagyeli like to gather and eat.
Gyeli is used by the consultants while the DoBeS team members speak French with the interpreter, DF, who, in turn, speaks Kwasio (Mabi dialect) with the Bagyeli.
SNY serves as interpreter and transcription helper in the Bakola team. He got some linguistic training from SIL and used to work with DD for several years as a language helper.
NB is a linguist in the DoBeS project documenting Kola/Gyeli.
Francois helps as interpreter in the coastal area both in Bibira and Lebdjom. At the same time, he serves as a motorbike driver and cook and takes care of Bagyeli visitors when they are in Kribi.
is well accepted in the community and somewhat taken more seriously than the official chief who might be imposed by the Bulu. He's supposed to become the treasurer of a planned snail raising farm.
