Description: | In the beginning the singer introduces himself. He is Matoc Mathok of the Pagong clan, led by chief Maluony Ayuel Makiec. The Pagong clan is based in the village called Thiet, in the Tonj district. He praises his bull mangar (mixed colour - black and white, in spotted array), and addresses this praise to his grandparents: Angong Agwok and Ajak Deng (grandfather and grandmother, respectively). He describes mangar as dark as the night in the summer season, and its mouth as black as an area where a grass has been burnt. Mangar is bright as an officer, wearing stars on his shoulder. He then sings about himself. He says, “I am not a jealous man. I fear not, our ancestor spirit (Deng Agany) is a powerful god/spirit.” It will protect me. Innocent people died, and left orphans, while the evildoers are alive, enjoying life. He calls on a lady called Abuk – possibly a friend of his mother’s – to convince his mother to go and find out about the daughter of Majok. The singer is in love with Majok’s daughter. He sings “I am worried about my lost fishing spear, Ajak Deng (grandmother). I am still searching it.” This conveys his helplessness in the love affair. I love Aluel (the daughter of Majok). Her name well known, as famous as that of chief Giir Ahaac-liai. I will call my father’s clan to help me to marry Aluel. I pray to our powerful (literally: bitter) ancestor spirit to let me get Aluel. [Achol: bitterness ‘akec’ is associated with spiritual power; cf. ‘bitter wood’ is used as medicine]. The voice (moo) of my bull in the swampy area is like mayen (this color pattern is associated with lions). My bull has a long tail as a lion. “Our ancestor spirit you are a powerful spirit, bring Aluel to me.” Finally, he praises his mother’s uncles in prose. | |
