The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Topological relations in Trumai. The data was elicited using the 'Topological relations picture series' organized by Bowerman and Pederson (1992).
The study is presented in English. There are examples from the Trumai language.
The study was conducted by the linguist Raquel Guirardello-Damian. The Trumai data were obtained in 2000, with the consultants: Speaker2, Speaker3, and Speaker11.
Speaker2 is considered one of the best speakers of the Trumai language. He also has strong knowledge about various aspects of the Trumai culture. He has been living in the city of Canarana since 1996, because of health problems. He lives with his wife and kids. Both his parents were Trumai. Speaker2 is married to a Kamayurá woman, who also speaks Trumai. He is middle-aged, has various kids and grand-kids.
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
Speaker11 is a native speaker of Trumai, but she is also fully bilingual in Portuguese. She has been living in the city of Canarana since 1997, because her father works there. Her mother is Trumai, her father is Suyá. Speaker11 has a little son.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
