Description: Videorecordings of one female early NGT signer and one female late NGT signer engaging in free conversation at home.

Logbook. The meeting of S027 and S113 at 31 May 2011. Location: The recordings are at the house of S027. We planned to meet for the recordings outside in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. But it was a cloudy, cold day, S027 decided to invite S113 and me, the recorder, at her house. The subjects of conversation between S027 and S113 is about parties, clothes, the upcoming wedding of friends, holiday etc. Technical information: The livingroom is small with large windows. S113 sat with her back to the windows, which caused a little bit a shaded face. The duration of the recordings is about 1,5 hours. Observation: S027 and S113 did meet each earlier to talk in a private before my arrival with the camera's. They did already talk for hours. Interpretation of the recorder: While recording I noticed both participants were aware of the camera's, they did talk in a controlled way, didn't stand up to do other things, they seemed to be not very relaxed or babbling about personally items. They seemed also to be sort of tired of talking. When I started to change the battery and the memorycards in the camera's, S027 and S113 asked if I could finish the records. Note: S027 and S113 received DVD's of the records, they asked for it.

Information from filled in backgrounddocument by S027: S027 does know her conversation partner for 2 years. She met S113 during nightlife for the first time, in a pub or at a party (tijdens het uitgaan). S027 became deaf when she was 4 years old. S027 participates in the deaf community by deaf friends and the Meeting Centre for the Deaf. S027 defines her sign skills as good. S027 does know from other sign languages the international sign language. S027 has one younger, deaf brother which uses sign language too. The question which of the hearing people in the environment of the signer use/used sign language, isn't replied. Write: right hand. Preference hand for signing: right hand. S027 wrote: 'If I am tired, I use my right hand most of the time'.

S113 does have one elder, deaf brother and one younger, hearing sister. The elder, deaf brother does know sign language. He participates not in the deaf community, S113 told the recorder. S113 participates in the deaf community by deaf friends, the Meeting Centre for the Deaf and by work. S113 defines her sign skills as good. S113 does know from other sign languages a bit ASL. The question which of the hearing people in the environment of the signer use/used sign language, isn't replied. Write: right hand. Preference hand for signing: right hand. S113 told Merel van Zuilen after the recording: she was stimulated by family and school to use speech only and to integrate in a hearing environment. S113 does have a deaf partner now, which participates prominent in the deaf community. S113 uses more sign language now, than in the past. She met her teachers of the past during a reunion. The teachers openly rejected her choice for sign language and participation in the deaf community.
